Portland, Me- Another gone too soon. Detective Ben Campbell, a detective with the Maine State Police lost his life on April 3, 2019. It was a slippery commute for many drivers in the Bangor, Maine area. Detective Campbell was on his way to the Maine Justice Academy in Vassalboro where he was an instructor. While traveling down interstate 95 in Hermon, he came across a disabled vehicle whom had lost control and was partially in the roadway. He stopped to render assistance. As he was standing at the roadside, a logging truck approached and two of the rear trailer tires separated from the trailer. One of the tires hit the car he was standing by with, while the other tire struck officer Campbell. Campbell sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after receiving pre-hospital care by the highly qualified firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
Officer Campbell leaves behind a wife and a 6 month old child. Funeral services were held on Tuesday April 9, 2019 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. Over 3,000 people were in attendance including Law Enforcement from around the country, fire departments, and general public.
