Portland, Me- The Corps., along with several other bands from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine honored Capt. Joel Barnes who was killed in the Service Line of Duty during a fully involved structure fire. It was later discovered that Joel Barnes had died while saving the life of one of his colleagues. Pipe Major Michael Lundin along with David McClean of New Hampshire Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums worked together to organize the pipes and drums and remain consistent with the tradition during public safety funerals.
Val Graffa, the Drum Major for the MPSP&D Corps., lead the massed bands during the processional and recessional. A small contingent made up of the several bands proceeded to the cemetery for the private graveside burial with the family and Berwick fire department.
It was a very cold, snowy, and wet day but it was a small price to pay for the sacrifice Captain Barnes paid. Rest easy Captain.
